How to Grow Your Confidence as a New Yoga Teacher

You have completed your 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training in India and ready to go out there and share your newly gained knowledge? Leading yoga classes in front of eager yoga students can be very overwhelming and scary. You may experience feelings of doubts and inability to teach. All the skills and confidence you built up during your yoga teacher training may feel like they started to fade away. So what do you do now? Should you just forget about teaching and wait until you do a 300 Hour Yoga Teacher Training?

Here are a few insider tips that will help you to re-build your confidence as a new yoga teacher and lead classes with intuitive flow and passion:

1. Jump into Teaching Right Away, As much as you Can

The best way to build your confidence and apply what you just learnt is to start teaching right away. Take every opportunity that you can, whenever you can. Teach as much as possible and gain as much experience as you can. This may sound a little too keen, but the truth is, the more you actually practise teaching, the better you will get and the more confident you will feel. Plus, it’s a great way to connect to people and build your own community of students and followers. Get your friends and family to join your classes in the park, apply to take some substitute classes at studios and give free classes to yoga beginners. Do NOT wait to teach! Just jump right into it! You can do it!

2.Embrace the fear, Believe in Yourself

When you teach your class, you may feel nervous at the beginning. You can help your students (and yourself) settle in a little by incorporating short pranayama or simple breathing exercise. It an excellent method to connect to the breath, create awareness and overcome fear. Pranayama has been proven to reduce stress and lift up the mood, so use this technique when in doubt, fear or stress. Always believe in yourself and trust the journey. Even when you make a mistake, it’s fine. You can reflect and improve for the next time.

3.Trick yourself into Being Confident until you are

It doesn’t matter that you are new to teaching yoga. You are now a qualified teacher who has gained the required education (200Hrs YTT). You studied a lot, you worked hard! Starting a class always seems nerve-wracking and impossible but tricking yourself into believing that you can do it and being confident will make a huge difference. Tell yourself that you can do it; that’s when the magic happens. Thinking positively and telling yourself that you are capable, confident and ready, works wonders. Inhale deeply, exhale completely and save all worries for after class.
